Pablo Léon de la Barra presents the case study of Las Pozas, English surrealist patron Edward James’ (1907-1984) tropical gothic concrete garden fantasy in the jungle of Xilitla in the Huasteca Potosina, Mexico. It was built continuously from the 1950s until his death, and which acted as a surrealist shangrila in which to surrender to homoerotic and tropical desires.

Pablo León de la Barra (Mexico)

Pablo León de la Barra is since 2013 Curator at Large, Latin America at the Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York. From 2017-20 he was also Chief Curator at MAC Museum of Contemporary Art of Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro. Based in Rio de Janeiro, he was born in Mexico City in 1972 and received his Ph.D. in Histories and Theories from the Architectural Association, London. He recently curated Cecilia Vicuña’s retrospective Spin Spin Triangulene at the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2022) and is currently preparing Gego: Measuring Infinity opening March 2023 also at the Guggenheim.
