For the ARTBO 2022 edition, Quadra intends to present the artists Marcelo Pacheco and Thomaz Rosa. The concrete forms, the graphics and the popular culture can be recognized as starting points for both artists' research. On the other hand, the degrees and paths of each shape their practices in distinct ways, allowing their poetics to represent the Brazilian contemporary art from different perspectives.
Marcelo Pacheco seeks to create layers that gather the several repertories of a revisited History of art – decorating arts –, as well as to create an affectionate gaze towards things in the domestic environment. He chats with the patterns, created or reproduced in their infinite variants by their fellows and ancestors, also inventing solutions that enable this convergency of diverse elements. He thus creates a poetic in which the simplicity and sophistication are able to coexist, on the side of matters that concern painting.
Meanwhile, Thomaz Rosa has lines, graphics, reflexive gestures and compositions from concrete points and forms, verbal analogies of images, as his work signature. His works are thought as autonomous constructions, capable of describing the sensation of the creative process, between a romantic idealism and a rational planning ahead of the modern tradition.
With this selection, Quadra aims to present paintings that talk about paintings, exploring the range between art and life. Moreover, they question the insertion of such artists in the world in a semiologic way, in which the piece attempts to live with the story reciprocally.
Founded in 2017 by Marcela Setton, Quadra gallery is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The gallery focuses on the production of young Brazilian contemporary artists, having as guiding principle and selection criteria the freedom to experiment. Quadra's curatorial approach emphasizes strongly a close collaboration and partnership with the represented artist, allowing a mutual growth through the set up of exhibitions and the organization of debates with art critics and curators, in a permanent effort to create a reflection on the state of Brazilian contemporary. This dialogue aims, above all, to encourage the creation of new collections, indeed, convinced by art's transformative power, Quadra's mission is to make art part of everyday life.
Thomaz Rosa (1989, São Caetano do Sul/SP, Brazil). In 2009, the artist initiated his Bachelor and Licentiate of Visual Arts degrees of the Arts Institute from the State University of São Paulo - UNESP. He worked as an assistant to artists such as Lucas Arruda, Claudio Cretti, Caetano de Almeida, Marina Rheingantz and Paulo Monteiro. In 2016, Rosa participated on the exhibition “Oito Artistas” in Galeria Mendes Wood DM, promoted by the artists Bruno Dunley and Lucas Arruda. In 2018, he did an artistic residency in PIVÔ. In 2019, he held his second individual exhibition – and his first in Europe, in Milan -, promoted by the Castiglioni gallery, called “Intorno alla mia cattiva educazione”. Later on, in 2021, he held the individual “Resenha”, in Quadra, with curatorship of Cammila Ferreira and Guilherme Teixeira, as well as participated on the collective “Just Breathe” in Miami. Lines, graphics, reflexive gestures, compositions made from concrete points and forms that are verbal analogies of images: signatures of Thomaz Rosa’s pieces. His works are thought as autonomous constructions capable of describing the sensation of the creative process – between a romantic idealism and a rational planning ahead of the modern tradition. Rosa’s works always seem to question his insertion in the world in a semiological way, in which the piece tries to live with the story reciprocally. Thomaz’ practice attempts to reprocess the influences that he subjectively chooses as a reference between various artist-painters, Brazilians or not, in specific moments of the production itself. This (re)process, in turn, happens through his own language proses. These choices maintain a transeunt character in relation to the thing. They reveal themselves as a walk that starts without a clear goal. In that sense, walking without a destination makes the self a flâneur amidst these choices, while intricating an interaction between matter and significance. Hence, the discrepancies between the singularity and the whole, individual and story, personal experience and signification are to bear a crystalline form. The symbolic memory, empirical strength and immediate livingness of the artist with the piece take shape in the project. Rosa’s ultimate goal is to show a painting that talks about painting. With that, he intends to show one or more declinations of various languages, since the language is fluid and mutable and walks in constant evolution, along with Thomaz’ art.

Marcelo Pacheco (1984, Campinas, SP/Brazil). Graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo, he develops his artistic production since 2013, devoting himself to paintings, sculptures and textile works. His pieces are born from visual or material elements that are chosen or collected by chance. Those, in turn, meet a common language by pictorial interventions from repetition and combinations. Making use of both noble and ordinary materials from the textile creation and of the presence of the decorative, his works communicate something special. The curator Fernanda Pitta described them as “the communitarian sense of things” seeking the opening of a welcoming space. In 2018, he held an individual exhibition in Galeria Sancovsky (São Paulo, Brazil) and a solo project in ParC Fair (Lima, Peru) under the curatorship of Manuela Moscoso. Moreover, he participated on the following collective exhibitions: “Tramas e Travessias” (Massapê Projetos), “Featuring” (Massapê Projetos), “O Negócio da Alma” (Centro Cultural dos Correios/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), “Paisagem-Cenário” (Galeria Sancovsky, with curatorship of Douglas de Freitas) and 8º Salão dos Artistas Sem Galeria. The artist was indicated for the Pipa Awards 2020. In 2021, he held individual exhibitions in Quadra, in Rio de Janeiro, with curatorship of Julie Dumont, and in Casa de Cultura do Parque, in São Paulo, under the curatorship of Claudio Cretti and text by Fernanda Pitta.
