Geomancies is an exhibition that integrates sound objects, bio circuits, video, and media derived from Jorge Barco's research on media archeology, analog electronics, and speculative design, carried out during the last two years. A set of artifacts and synthesizers that allow you to listen to recordings on the field, nature, and geological materials, through piezoelectricity and electromagnetism. Meteorites, copper, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, water, and wind, amplifying oscillations, deep basses, rhythmic pulses, and layered drones using machines that serve as totems. An exhibition that addresses the relationships between matter and sound, ecology and listening, as elements to connect the cosmic origins of the earth through sound from an esoteric perspective. The exhibition also integrates the Sonosfera project, in which processes of generative drawing, performances, and sound are combined, and a calendar of live acts around sound experimentation.
La Balsa Arte started activities in 2014 in Bogotá, occupying a place in the Torres del Parque, heritage building. The objective was to represent, promote and exhibit the work of national artists, Colombians living abroad and international artists whose work reflects research processes in contemporary issues. Considering that the field of plastic is a powerful tool for thinking, confronting or reinterpreting the relationships of a globalized world, La Balsa Arte has focused on maintaining a close conversation with artists of several generations. Art research refers to the undertaking of any systematic activity whose objective is to expand the boundaries of understanding and knowledge, both aesthetic and in the social sciences, the relations between culture and society, development history of the current world.
In his years of activity, he has sponsored the participation of his artists in fairs, cultural exchanges, residences and logistical support for production. The gallery has two locations. In Medellín it opened its doors in 2017, recovering a house from the 30s of the 20th century, with a history linked to the arts in the city, in Bogotá it was moved to a place in the north of the city, close to hotels, restaurants and financial centers.
Jorge Barco, Artist based in Medellín, Colombia who investigates media archeology, speculative design and geological materials from the sonorous perspective. He combines media such as analog electronics, the intervention of technologies and objects found in installations, as well as field recording and sound performance. His work has circulated in different spaces in Latin America and Europe dedicated to sound art; He was recently part of the Audiosfera group exhibition at the Reina Sofía Museum, with a cassette composed of DIY artifacts entitled Máquinas Mestizas (Madrid 2020), La Residencia Nuevos Cronológicas del Sonido focused on field recording made in Portugal in 2021, His Sonosfera performance in the agenda of the ZKM Germany's Critical Zones exhibition in 2021, and his solo exhibition Premonitory Materials at La Balsa Medellín Gallery in 2020. He is currently researching the sound and electromagnetic landscape of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano in the Coffee Region region of Colombia and is studying the Master in Sound Art at the University of Barcelona. He has also exhibited his work in the Art Museums of Panama (2018), Contemporary Art of Bogotá (2021), the Aveiro Art Museum (Portugal 2017), MediaLab Prado Madrid in 20015, several exhibitions at Casa Hoffman (between 2017 and 2021), Fairs and festivals such as Arte Cámara, Voltaje and Experimenta Sur in Bogotá, and Imagen Fest in Manizales, Visiones Sonoras del CMMAS and Transitio del Centro Nacional de las Artes in Mexico. His work is part of private collections in the United States and Colombia. In addition to his work as an artist, he works as a curator of special projects at the Museum of Modern Art in Medellín where he has led several programs around digital culture, experimental laboratories and sound art in the last decade, he also collaborates with several independent groups and communities of Medellín and South America around the electronic arts.
