Nos(otrxs) dos dos is a collective exhibit based on an exercise of (re)distributed selection that consists of a relegated invitation mechanism: we begin by inviting one artist who invites another artist who invites another artist, and so on and so forth, until the cycle is repeated or the possibilities are exhausted. This mechanism allows us to create a map of a network created from affection and complicity. Independent spaces throughout the country are going through a critical time. In part because of the pandemic, in part because of the mercantile and neo-liberal focus of the Orange Economy policies, in part because private support for experimental projects is still not enough. Thus, the production of exhibitions maintains precarious dynamics that are not only exclusive to independent spaces, as galleries and other institutions also replicate these practices. Beyond offering a critical perspective, Nos(otrxs) dos puts into practice those other ways of relating to each other, of working together, of doing, of exhibiting, of creating. Those other ways which become urgent as they offer platforms for circulation that operate outside of the market and production conditions established by our sector, while also recognizing the practices of collaboration and emotion that sustain it.
We have thus far invited our first guest: OTRO. OTRO is an independent space that since 2023 has been working out of the third floor of Espacio Odeón’s offices. Keeping in mind the exhibition’s dynamic, we must wait until OTRO invites another artist, and then another. In this way we are expecting works from between 8-20 Colombian artists which will be disposed in one of the spaces of the Odeón building. Espacio Odeón will be in charge of setting up the works based on the final selection. In the following sections, we are only including the information of OTRO, the first agent and an ally of the project, specifically their exhibition NOSOTROS (2023), which laid the groundwork for this exercise.
Otro (Other) is us but it is also everything that we are not. Otro (Other) is the urgency to recognize the other, to create with the other, to and for the the other. Otro (Other) is Otro (anOther) art space, for coming together, for showing others. Otro (Other) is created by us with the help of many others. For us and for others. Otro (Other) is the possibility of looking and listening to what others have to say and show. It is also another answer to another need, another idea for another possiblity. It is our choice to create from our gut, to build and gather through love, friendship and intuition. Doing what we like, what we love, what we know and discovering what we don't. NOSOTROS was an exhibition planned around the universal and basic act of choosing. We selected friends, artists, agents, curators and others and asked them to select a work from their house or their private collection that wasn’t their creation. Nos(otrxs) dos) puts into practice that gesture from 2023.
