In Land Analysis, a solo show by artist Wilson Guerrero, a dialogue is established around how the individual-territory relationship is constructed. Through the representation of figures such as peasants, children and agricultural production systems, Guerrero seeks to put in tension dynamics that have been woven around the land as a resource: from the voracious exploitation and the idea of private property, to the notion of a border as a symbolic fiction. To this end, he employs atypical pictorial inputs and media such as wire mesh, which is used to delimit and isolate land, the mosquito net, which is used, among other things, to wash and sift the fruits of the earth, and wood, the backbone of rural vernacular architectures; elements that have become not only the material vehicle of his work but also, thanks to their discursiveness, contribute considerably to the conceptual load of his art pieces. Founded and directed by Elsa Pombo, Ocre opened its doors to the public in September 2021. Ocre is an art gallery that seeks to foster Colombian artists belonging to different professional trajectories, from those who are young and emerging to those more experienced and renowned. The gallery’s proposal is to offer a kind, comfortable environment that breaks free from more traditional frameworks, making its visitors feel welcome and making art accessible to all.
The peasant culture brings with it countless knowledge that for generations has been handed down from father to son in the day-to-day of their noble activity. This includes a universe of knowledge that determines what and how much is taken from the land for the benefit of themselves and their communities. For years this elementary principle has ensured to preserve the delicate balance that the planet demands of us, but the absurd logic of modernity and its growth has been responsible for progressively hurting this balance. In this bleak framework, my attention is focused on looking for communities where I get to understand and live this entire culture full of oral tradition, ancestral knowledge and customs strongly linked to a feeling of gratitude and respect for the land. The interaction with peasant populations allows me to focus my research that make visible and vindicate their hard work in building society. With simple elements such as drawing or the resignification of objects typical of the countryside, I materialize works where the history between man and earth can be rewritten.
