Juan Rodríguez Varón and Alexandra Agudelo will be present in the Main Hall and the Projects Room, respectively, at the Nueveochenta gallery.
The paintings that make up the most recent project by Juan Rodríguez Varón (Bogotá, 1988) latest project stem from an exercise in observing the qualities of objects or nature—its volume, colors, potential transformations, and its relationship with space.
In the project room, Alexandra Agudelo (Tuluá, 1959) presents a proposal that unfolds in two installed spaces: on one hand, 'En un jardín florido,' which lends its name to the exhibition, pays homage to the crowned Nuns—silver sculptures that undergo variations linked to the funeral headdresses of these famous pictorial pieces.
"The Cabinet of Artifacts", on the other hand, alludes to the work of the Dutch still life painter Clara Peeters, undoubtedly a great representative of this pictorial genre in the Netherlands. Agudelo thus pays tribute to women who have been protagonists of art and culture, made invisible by history.
Nueveochenta opened its doors in March 2007 as a space dedicated to the diffusion of contemporary Latin American art, maintaining special emphasis on the plastic and commercial consolidation of a group of eighteen artists at both a local and international level. In addition, it seeks to expand its reach through links with major international galleries for the exchange of artists and proposals.
The project aims to maintain the basic roles of a gallery and understands that accompanying the careers of the represented artists is a very important mission, as is the role of the space as a generator of tools for the consolidation of their proposals.
The main interest of Juan Rodríguez Varón (Bogotá, 1988) as an artist has been the formal exploration of the pictorial medium as a process. Fluctuating between the abstract and the figurative, his paintings reveal the relationships between different elements, particularly spaces, objects, light, and atmospheres. His work is characterized by the meticulous examination of these elements and their formal properties, and the way through which they interrelate. Through these tensions, the artist shapes his paintings as new presences. Rodríguez Varón studied Arts at Los Andes University, Colombia, and completed a Master’s degree in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He currently lives and works in Bogotá.
In a flowering garden. The solo exhibition that Alexandra Agudelo will carry out on the first floor of Gallery Nueveochenta is a proposal that opens in two installed spaces: on the one hand In a flowering garden, which gives its name to the exhibition, pays tribute to the crowned Nuns, silver sculptures that carry out variations related to the funeral headdresses of these famous pictorial pieces, using contemporary and vernacular silver treatment techniques. The Cabinet of Artifacts, on the other hand, alludes to the work of the Dutch still life painter, Clara Peeters, without a doubt, a great representative of this pictorial genre in the Netherlands. Agudelo thus, pays tribute to women who have been protagonists of art and culture, made invisible by history. The various pieces developed by Agudelo use mixed and hybrid techniques, some of which collect and honor knowledge that is currently becoming extinct or scarcely practiced, such as glass blowing or barniz de Pasto, to dialogue with the work of the silver.
