The world on fire, the exhibition with which RINCÓN participates in ARTBO Week articulates works by Colombian artists Nicolás Cadavid (Bucaramanga), Ana Cantoni (Berlin), Lia García (Bogotá), Tahuanty Jacanamijoy (Bogotá), Juan David Laserna ( Bogotá) and Oskar Romo (Pasto) around the image and symbolism of fire- from its physical and visible form such as flames or smoke, or in mechanisms such as weapons or rockets.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic began, in 2019 large fires and devastating environmental effects occurred in different regions of the planet such as Australia and the Amazon, which in some way may have marked the beginning of an era that has transformed the the world as we knew it, life as we lived it and which has disrupted the deepest structures of society, further exposing social inequalities, the environmental crisis we are experiencing and questions about the accumulation of excessive wealth by some few, among many other issues that have been unveiled in the past months.
More recently, we have seen images of movements and social protests where fire and smoke appear again in the panorama: fires of statues, tires, barricades not only in Colombia but also in other countries, events such as the first private space trips where the rocket smoke seizes the sky, or new environmental fires in different regions. Fire, one of the four elements, has been part of the spiritual life of human beings, being used in rites and ceremonies, where its symbolic meaning has been related to notions of purification, illumination and power.
This exhibition links the production of the aforementioned artists - who in several cases respond to these current events or can be easily linked to them - through the symbolic and pictorial of fire.
